Pablo Picasso

Picasso probably is the most famous painter of the 20th century. He had a long artistic career, creating thousands of abstract paintings.

Pablo Picasso was born on October 25, 1881, in Malaga, Spain. His father was Jose Ruiz and his mother was Maria Picasso. Picasso decided to use his mother's rare name, Picasso, as his last name. At 14 years old, he completed the one month qualifying examination of the Academy of fine Arts in Barcelona in one day! After that he went to the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid, returning to Barcelona in 1900.

Picasso had two color periods, the blue period, 1901-1904, and the rose period, 1905-6. In 1907 Picasso painted Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. Picasso met Georges Braque, the other leading figure in the Cubist movement. They worked "together" from 1911-1913.

The 1920's, Picasso was in his best years yet, designing theater sets and painting Cubist, Classical and Surreal Paintings. Picasso responded to the saturation bombing of the civilian target of Guernica, Spain by painting the anti-war painting, Guernica (shown above).

From 1947-1973 Picasso did a number of things. In 1970, three years before his death, he donated more than 800 of his paintings to the Berenguer de Aguilar Palace Museum in Barcelona.

Picasso died on April 8, 1973 in Mougins, France. He was 91 years old.
